Ultimate Man Cave

Posted on: October 21st, 2011

Man Cave can be defined as:

A house or apartment which upon entering it is immediately evident that no women live there, as the manliness of the man or men living inside is visible in every part of a mancave

Get your head in the Game.

Walls – Don’t be boring, do something other than beige walls. Check out MuralsYourWay.com and look for your favorite stadium mural. The below is the Michigan Vs. Iowa game. Sizes range from 8′w x 3′h (one section $227.76) to 16′-8″w x 6′-8″h (five sections $981.00).  Relive the game and be part of the crowd.

MuralsYourWay.com $227.76 for this 8'w x 3'h wallpaper mural

Sustenance.

Noms – Vending machines. There are a variety of personal vending machines available. From small countertop storage that hold 9 beverage cans to commercial size machines that hold 344 of your favorite Noshings. The system is programmed to accept both coins and bills. Presumably you would be inviting over your bro-friends so don’t be cheap and program the value at $0.00 per snack.

Seaga VC3000 Snack Machine $3,195

Drink – It wouldn’t be a brocave without a kegerator. Undercounter, mini, single tap to triple tap and for conversion kits and everything you need to know about ‘em check out kegerators.com

Beercaves – Beer loses quality every time it shifts from room temp to chilled. A beer cave is a custom room (any size you want) that is temperature controlled at a chilly 28 degrees Fahrenheit. Originally they were created to cut back on restocking time in super markets but I would love to see them in custom build outs.  If a room seems too much, consider an transparent Sub zero refrigerator dedicated to your favorite brands.

The Pub – Where everybody knows your name.

Bars come in all sizes and custom capabilities. If you are on a budge, Ikea Hack. Use pieces of their commercial hardware to create your own bar using a few base cabinets, both counter and bar tops, and free standing bookshelves for back bar storage.

Custom bars can include full amenities: Temperature controlled wine cellar, under counter refrigerator drawers, full wet bar, custom cabinetry, hand planed countertops, brass foot rails, raised paneling and more. It might we worth your while to design it out and check the cost while it’s still on paper versus diving into a remodel.

 Bathroom Break.

Tim the Tool-Man Taylor is pretty close, though his ideas could use a little fine tuning. Besides the essentials explore some personalized touches. For example stainless steel (treated and brushed so it won’t show fingerprints) wall paneling would amp the space up but nothing says “man” like a urinal.  The limit to what you would like installed is astounding. Toilet seats, for example, have come a long way. Kohler recently has introduced the C3 series that incorporates an adjustable water spray for temperature and pulsating motion. Sorry Charmin, looks like you might not be the bees knees anymore.  Further more this new age seat comes heated for additional comfort, adjustable warm-air flow for drying, and built-in odor control.  I don’t judge but I’ve heard from a few of my clients it’s worth the whopping $1,048.00 you pay for it.  Toilet not included.

GOAL.

Games: It’s necessary for you guys with attention disorders to have a few things going on. Billiard and foosball tables can be very expensive and can eat up the real estate needed for those gambling machines.  Park & Sun has an answer: 4 in 1 game table. You get foosball, billiards, rod hockey and dice football for $438.75

Darts: PubSignShop.com allows you to rule your domain by customizing dart boards, beer signs, poker boards and much, much more. Prices run from $29.00 up to $200.00 a noteworthy site, bookmark it boys. Custom Dart board from PubSignShop.com $118

If you have a sprawling pad; the sky is the limit to types of game tables, pub tables and quantities of games showcased.

Offseason.

Got the post season blues? No worries. Grab a seat, pop some popcorn and watch the recaps in your Home Theater.  Better yet, snuggle up with your lady friend (yes, remember her?) and watch a non-sports related movie.

Moderate Rustic Home Theater

High End Custom Home Theater. Jay Miller, president of Acoustic Innovations joined with Jeff Hoover, dream maker and president of Audio Advisors, in creating this sci-fi theater which has motion-activated air-lock doors with series sound effects, and a Red Alert button on the Crestron TPMC-10 controller.

Just like anything we design, we can scale up or down.  Home theaters can be complex and can begin at a $6,000 upgrade and go up to $135,000. high end built out.  Key points: controlled lighting, comfortable seating, high quality materials, plenty of storage, and oh yes… THE BIGGEST SCREEN POSSIBLE. The ratio of movie screen is quite scientific. Standard HDTV is 16:9, Classic film is 4:3, Super wide screen, that most contemporary films are produced in, is 2.35:1  I’m going resist going into further detail in order to save this topic for another blog.

Trick or Treat

LOVE these. If you don't like getting your fingers gooey carving pumpking, try wrapping them in decorative fishnets.

The older I become, the more fun I seem to have on Halloween.  I’m going to pay a little homage to Martha Stewart, her phenomenal team and all you creatives for excellent ideas.

If you would like these pillows to sit outside consider outdoor friendly fabrics. You can purchase the stencil through ChapmanPlace on Etsy.com for $7.99

Always reccomended: Personalize your space using different fabrics, colors and the message itself.

Spooky Spider Wreath. Purchase a wreath and spray paint it black. Stuff some moss in and around the center as "nesting" material. You can even spray paint this a contrasting color for dramatic effect. Purchase FAKE plastic spiders from any toystore or online source and one big nasty mama spider and hot glue them onto the wreath.

Can't handle the spiders? Me either. Try a simpler wreath like this one. Just add googly eyes!

LOVE these. If you don't like getting your fingers gooey carving pumpkins, try wrapping them in fishnets. You can purchase these for just a few dollars at TJMaxx, Amazon, Target, etc.

Creepy Cupcakes. For you crafty bakers you can purchase these printable cupcake toppers and cup wrappers from sueniosencantados for $6 per download on etsy.com Too vintage for you? Search etsy for other easy downloadable cupcake holders and toppers.

Dreadful Bed of Roses. You can take this as far and as literal as you'd like. Country Living.com will show you how to make this eery bouquet using black crepe paper. Store them for next year.

If you are one of those people that expense means nothing for the sake of an amazing theme party, purchase a dozen real roses and spray paint just the flower black. Customize your colors to your decore. You could try grey roses or a combination with one or two in contrasting colors.

Your dinner party will not want to leave ... and might not have the chance with this Edgar Allen Poe tablescape. Courtney's DIY table at CourtneyOutLoud.wordpress.com shows us how easy it is to combine frugal finds into a table setting. The Flatware is from an antique store, the black goblets are from target, gargoyles from the dollar store and feather charges were a DIY project for under $5.00. Anything is possible with a little will power, quote the raven, nevermore.

Dinner tales from the crypts prove to be excellent inspiration for halloween. A very malice Alice setting shown above with "drink me if you dare" shots and Mad Hatter place cards.

Hopefully you’ve gotten a few wicked ideas to customize hallows eve.  Happy Halloween Dwellers.  .  .

Nail head trim could potentially be my new favorite obsession. I’ve used it countless times in window treatments, upholstery, casegoods and headboards but I would like to expand my patterns.  Got any ideas of where you could put it in your home?

Pattern … meet Texture

Philippe Starck Chair for Driade. Functional art.

Patterns can direct your eye to a focal point, create a path, add some color or just plain be amazing. Here are a few examples of things I’ve recently found online that inspired a new room design that I will post in a few weeks. I’ve also posted a few of my very own projects in here.

A Nouveau door uses architecture to create a bold and beautiful pattern in an entry way

Polka dots, squares and diamonds, Oh my! A super cute room
for 4 adorable little girls.

A beautiful black and white zig zag fabric brings drama to an antique set of Winged chairs

Large stenciled walls are easy to do and are great to frame art and give some personality to the space.

White built-ins set the stage for the gold and gray striped cushions, and funky patterned pillows breathing life and a sense of whimsy into this space.

Philippe Starck Chair for Driade. Nuff said.

This hounds-tooth fabric unites a set of mismatched chairs. Recycled, reused, redefined.

Herringbone colorful wall tiles add an entirely new dimension into an all white bathroom.

Basket weave flooring using 12x24 tiles in charcoal and pewter with a 6x6 in white.

There are a million different ways of playing with pattern. But the result will always add a sort of texture to the space, no matter where it’s applied. It’s an effective tool for expressing yourself and personalizing your space.  The best news, is that it doesn’t have to be expensive.

Give it a shot … share your before and afters by emailing them to me!

wall decor - viny butterflies

What can I say … I ramble.  I get very excited about my craft as a Designer and feel the need to explain everything to death.  Maybe someday I will be noted as a good resource or the amazing rambling one. But not today, not on Rex Manning Day.  Today, I’m going to do a couple quick shout outs on photos I’ve collected that have inspired me as I was searching for some decorative wall ideas.  Check em out …

Card Number Plaques

It’s all about grouping. Alone each tile is not so impressive but as a collection it becomes amazing.

Dutch Designer Jonas Samson creation

Jonas created an interesting solution for boring wallpapers. This creates a focal point, becomes a piece of art and adds a little ambience as it lights up. Yes, it LIGHTS up.  Don’t worry dwellers, it can be turned off if want a little less mood.

Giant Paper Ethereal Flowers

Could frame of few of these paper peonies at your local hobby store to add more permanence. Cheap and beautiful.

Custom Art work created by Paul Villinski

I’m a music fiend. My husband and most of our friends are DJ’s. Thus the inspirational post. This would make an amazing addition next to the decks.

Ran out of room? In the closet that is. No reason you couldn’t display your shoes on shelves on the wall or in plexi boxes. Functional art at it’s finest.

Ok, For the Men … we can design for you too. Do you wear a lot of hats each day? I know I do. Here’s an interesting way of displaying them, easily accessible and lookin good!

Off to hunt for more ideas.

Out of the Blue …

Posted on: September 14th, 2011

Colors have meanings and evoke emotional feelings. So before you go splashin’ paint on the wall let’s make sure the mood is set.

RED  … is often associated with Fire and Blood.  It symbolizes energy, strength, power, passion, desire and love.  It is an intense color with high visibility that attracts your eye immediately.  This is why Stop signs are red, it is generally found in national flags and used frequently in advertising.  Red is a great color for rooms that need excitement and generate movement: Home Theaters, Kitchens and Dining rooms.  A caution: Red is difficult to work with and should be used sparingly.

ORANGE … is often associated with the tropics. It symbolizes enthusiasm, success, and stimulation.  It’s not as aggressive as Red and not as jubilant as yellow. It’s right in the middle and one of my favorite colors. The warm tones generally promote an appetite and activity so this color would be great in a work out room, children’s play areas, bonus rooms and game rooms.

YELLOW … is often associated with joy, happiness, intellect and energy.  A cheerful color often both pleasant and soothing. Very rarely does someone tell me they do not like yellow.  Cheerful and new, this color is great for kitchens, and social rooms. It can be overwhelming depending on the brightness so be careful in bedrooms, as these rooms need to be soothing.  Babies have been known to cry in rooms that are too bold with yellow because they are overstimulated.

GREEN …   is often associated with the outdoors. As in nature, green symbolizes growth, success, and can be restful and soothing.  It’s also known for it’s strong emotional correspondence with safety.  This color is great for bedrooms, offices or family rooms.  This is not a good color for Dining rooms as it does not promote your appetite as much as a warmer palette does.

BLUE … is often associated with water and sky.  It symbolizes faith, loyalty, confidence, intellect, tranquility and calmness.  Unlike warmer palettes which are much more emotional colors, Blue evokes a relaxing vibe. This color is great for bedrooms, hospitals, reading areas and study areas.  This color would not be good for rec rooms, work out rooms, or kitchens (though it is an appetite suppressant if you need to lose a few lbs… )

PURPLE … is often associated with Royalty. It symbolizes power, wealth and extravagance but it also known to promote creativity.  75% of pre-adolescent children prefer purple to all other colors. Purple is seldom used in homes though it is one of my favorite colors. It has a certain mystery and feminine feel to it though when used in the right way can be very masculine and bold. This color, in my biased opinion, is underrated and can be used in offices, bedrooms, rec rooms, and home theaters.

WHITE … is often associated with innocence and purity. Many people prefer white walls, white trim or white furniture because it represents cleanliness.  It has a positive connotation and can be used in a million ways in a home.  White walls create a canvas for creative accent walls, art work, or bold ceilings and furnishings. White can be used as an accent in the same way.

BLACK … is often associated with power, formality, death and mystery.  Many people fear black as it held a negative connotation back in the day. For example, people still dress in black to symbolize grief.  But let me stick up for this bold and beautiful color for a min. Black can be an excellent contrast for many colors, it can make you look thinner, and can be gorgeous as in black and white photographs. It can be intimidating, but so can every other color. Believe me, I’ve seen it.

GREY … is often associated with the corporate world. Grey is a sophisticated color and is fast replacing the neutral beige.  Grey can be a very formal color and a symbol of strength but lighter colors of grey evoke a soothing natural vibe when combined with pastels.  Grey is one of the most versatile colors and is growing in popularity very quickly.

Let’s chat … Are you considering painting something? I’d love to hear!  Leave me a comment or email me your photos. I’m going to upload photos I’ve done using these colors during the week to show off color how we interpret color. Stay tuned.

Have a great weekend folks. Dwell well.

Holiday … Celebrate

Posted on: September 9th, 2011

Labor day reminds me of BBQ, Bathing Suits and Beach Houses.  Every year we celebrate with our amazing friends up “north.”  For those of you who know me, you know “north” isn’t that far away due an unfortunate case of motion sickness, particularly in automobiles.  This labor days begins with a three hour trip to a familiar place where time seems to slow down, laughter fills the air, friends become family and a good book becomes the perfect snuggle buddy.  It’s home away from home and sometimes just worth blogging about.

“It’s time to cruise”… which usually means it’s time to jump in the pontoon and cruise around 8point lake.  Every year we notice we stop and talk about the same home.  It’s so well done.  It made us wonder and hope the interior was equally as stunning.  This week I’m going to take a stab at it and design it myself.  I’m looking for grades here people, so don’t forget to comment and let me know what you think!

Let’s begin with a couple steps up onto the patio, journey through the french doors and envision finding yourself in a trimmed out paradise!

Old Hickory Tannery “Raza Pressley” baby blue tufted leather sofa. From Horchow $3,999.00

A tailored, tufted seat and and slick silhouette of  a leather sofa will anchor a raised panel wainscot wall beckoning you to sit, relax and enter into a good convo. I’m imagining the walnut floors are accented with beautifully subtle, neutral paint colors. My favorite pick of the month Benjamin Moore Navajo White OC-95.

And just maybe the all seasons room, adjacent this beautiful sitting room, contains a cottage style dining set. TIP: not all pieces of furniture have to match exactly. Notice the chairs do not match the table, and the sideboard doesn’t match anything. The monochromatic color concept is the balance to the unmatched pieces. TRICK: Stick to colors found in nature to create a soothing cottage retreat.

From the Coastal Living Cottage collection from Stanley Furniture. Price varies

After a long hard day of playing in the sun you’ll need a beautiful place to rest. So let’s take a trip up the painted staircase to the master suite and see what kind of damage we can do. TIP: Pillows make the beds look amazing! But you’ll have to store these bad boys when you actually want to use the bed. Try searching locally for accent pillows. That way you aren’t heart broken when you catch Fido sleeping on the dry clean only Euros in the corner.

Eastern Accents Ceylon Blue Bedding Starting at $664.00

I’m envisioning the master bath to be fully loaded with amenities: his and her vanities, walk out private patio, soaking tub and accents of glass mosaic tile. A little bit goes a long way. Glass is very trendy so be careful of your qty’s.   Below is a computer rendering I did to illustrate the design.  Trick: Paint is the most inexpensive tool which makes the biggest impact. Try to experiment with your focal walls.

Let’s see … we’ll need a few accessories for finishing touches:

Forest Floor Decorative Vintage Vase from Target $14.99

Lake Locker Baskets from Restoration Hardware $59.00 ea.

If you prefer pops of color you can mix any of these in for good measure and brighten up the scheme.

Color Drop vases from Global Views $98

Flying Wall Bowls from Global Views S/3 $78

Emissary Tuscan Garden Stool - $184.99

Hope you all had a wonderful Holiday! Cheers.

Got Paint?

Posted on: August 18th, 2011

Dwellers … We all have been there.  You move into a new place and immediately think what’s first… PAINT!! Definitely Paint.  It’s the least expensive, biggest impact home improvement you can make.  It sets the mood, transforming the blazay beige to a serene spa retreat. It can be creative, it can be bold and it can also be subtle.  But where do you start? You slip on the sneaks and search for your keys hiding somewhere under the last pile of mail you sifted through. Jump in the car and then the first decision starts … where do you go?  Most start at the closest and most convenient Big Box store.  Usually greeted by an associate you find your way to the intimidating display of one million, expertly coordinated tiny paint chips and proceed to concentrate. After 20 frustrating minutes you walk away with twenty samples and remain hopeful they will look as good in the house as they did in the store.  It doesn’t have to be so serious. It’s not a science. This should be fun and if you follow these steps we’ll make it through together.

Step 1.Plan

Come with a Game Plan.  Take a few minutes and do a little research.  Look around your house. What do you have to work with.  Amazing Architecture?  Furniture choices? Accents? Art work? Do a quick inventory of what you have. Check out magazines, the Internet and even your family/friends/neighbors homes to see how they have expressed themselves. If you like write it down.

Step 2. Shop

Head out for an initial “go.” Grab an arm cover from your sofa or your favorite object for inspiration and bring it with you to the paint store. Maybe your painting Kitchen? If that’s the case take one of your display dishes, a sample of your granite and the sample of your cabinetry.  It will prove most useful, I promise.  Take a gander and try to be selective. Don’t grab one hundred paint samples. Try and limit yourself to the top 10 lucky samples that beg to be taken home.  *SHAMELESS PLUG: Working with a Designer can take the head ache out of the selection process. It’s our job to search within you and bring a handful of samples that generally one you’ll love, one you’ll hate and one that’s perfect.  Most Big Box stores will offer sample mini jars of your color selection that you can paint on the wall to see a larger version.  It’s better than those tiny rectangular swatches that look dramatically different when you are surrounded by it. But it’s still not great. Why? Because you cannot remove that sample, it can confuse, complicate and cause frustration if it wasn’t quite what you expected.  Designers have working relationships with various manufacturers and can usually order large samples (as many as you want) and tape them together essentially painting your wall in removable samples. Best part … they are FREE!  I should mention again that they are removable so if they are indeed not what you were thinking you just pull them off and put the next sample up.

Step 3. Decide

Take your time. Think about it. Live with it. Examine how the lighting changes the color and how the color interacts with it’s new roommies.  More importantly how does it make you feel? Is it what you expected? At this point you can make any necessary changes.  “Like what?” You might ask. Maybe you won’t. Maybe that one color is it. But for some people your self expression tends to be … well … slightly more complex.  Let’s look at the room one last time.

  • You have your walls. Check.  Are all walls the same color? For some of you that is just fine and you don’t need to push the envelope any further.  For you other Dwellers maybe something bold like an accent wall is in order. A punch of color creating a focal point is way more your speed.
  • Look up … Ceiling (Hopefully). Check. what types of details does your ceiling have. Possible exploration here too. But we’ll get into decorative ceilings and it being the fifth most overlooked wall in a later post.
  • Look down … Floors. Check. Are they wood, carpet or something else.  I’m currently working on a project for a child’s outdoor playhouse. The client’s don’t want to spend too much money but would like a “WOW” impact. We painted the floor with four colors and an intricate pattern transforming an unfinished plywood  platform into a child’s dream room.
  • Trim… Check. This includes casing, baseboard, doors and architectural embellishments.  Are you painting these items too? Side note: if you are painting your walls dark, I would recommend your trim go light for contrast. And yes it’s absolutely ok to paint wood.

Step 4. Basics

Ok… So now you have an idea of what you want to do and what you want to paint. How much is it and how much do you need? Here’s the skinny:

Wall area = Perimeter x Height of ceiling

Trim area = sq ft of doors (approx 21 sq ft ea) and windows (must measure)

Ceiling = Length x Width

If your trim is a different color than the walls subtract that from the wall area.
Divide each area you’d like to paint by 400 (1 gallon of paint) to see how many gallons or quarts you need.

1 gallon of paint = 1 coat on 400 sq ft.
1/2 Gallon = Buy 2 Quarts
1/5 Gallon = Buy 1 Quart

Ok… Get our your wallets. A typical Gallon of paint can cost anywhere from $15 to $35.  Speciality finishes like metallic, suede or other faux finishes obviously could vary and could cost much more.

TIPS and TRICKS:

Rules are Meant to be broken. It is a wives tale that dark colors create caves. Not always.  Tom Verwest, who is the principle of my company and brilliant, cutting edge designer once painted the walls in a small Powder Room all Black. It was GORGEOUS and beyond unexpected! So what’s the story Morning Glory? Dark colors receed and if used in the appropriate way with the right furnishings and accessories can actually enhance the mood you are going for.

Ceilings should be white.  Wrong. I cannot tell you  how many times I have been shot down by clients to paint their ceilings different colors other than bright white.  I’m not saying they need to be polka dots, but a slighter color than the walls or in contrast it could be a very bold color.  Painting your ceiling a different color than white can create more height in the room, create a focal point around the ceiling medallion the light fixture is mounted to or in some cases create an awning that encourages your child to be creative and express themselves in their rooms.

When it comes to rules … Rip them up and throw them out. It’s just paint. Get your samples. If you don’t like, it’s just paint. Paint over it.

Creative Paint ideas: Use paint color to create focal points.  They help give order and interest to rooms. Experiment with techniques. If you can’t do them hire a professional.  Trust me, it’s worth it.  There are many types of techniques and finishes either in fauxs, textures, stripes and shapes.  I’ll save examples of these for another blog later. You can also play with color schemes.  You seem examples at the store.  These manufacturers are trying to make it easier for you. They have color cards with suggestions based on trends in the market.  Sherwin Williams is very good at this and even have a magazine named STIR  that explains the latest and greatest.  All are based on Color Theory and are easy to follow. In the next few weeks i’ll explain the difference between Analogous and Monochromatic and pros and cons of each.

Would love to hear your feedback and see your painted projects.  Please shoot me photos of things you are working on and maybe we’ll blog about them soon. Dwell Well out there.

Cre8tive Thinking

Posted on: August 8th, 2011

I admire a creative mind. In fact I applaud it. You’ve heard the saying “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure”.  Let’s check out some clever re-uses of items.

Love to read but ran out of storage? You could create a desk. The more books the bigger the desk!

This console table is made of an old barn beam. Sleek and clean it is a conversation starter and perfect table for your favorite piece to sit.

Architectural Salvage Warehouses are some of the most inspiring places to walk through. Full of items that are just waiting to be re-purposed. There are many great places locally that you might not know of.  Architectural Salvage Warehouse located on 15th street in Detroit has a helpful website and friendly staff to help if you are looking for something specific. Check out www.aswdetroit.org   If you are located in the Royal Oak Area you could stop by and see Marisa at Heritage CO II on East 7th street in Royal Oak. Don’t forget Antique shops are great resource for new treasures.

These silver trays are hung with wire, mounted on the wall and used as magnetic boards.  These would be amazing to post photos on as well.

Door Knobs can be used in many creative ways, shown here as decorative drapery tiebacks. But could also be used to hang towels, robes or even photographs with ribbons.

These antique corbels double as functional bookends

Ladders make excellent storage pieces. Mounted vertically you can hang magazines, blankets and in some cases and with certain ladders books, cds or dvds.

The shabby chic style begs for re-purposed items. Given the style itself revolves around items that are chosen for their distressing, vintage and feminine flare … hence the “chic.”This mantel piece makes a stunning headboard in a Master Suite. The inset arch could instantly go masculine if upholstered in the right fabric, perhaps a navy stripe?

Many of these friezes come with the actual mantels attached which could double as a bookshelf.  Contact your local handyman and see if he could even retrofit a reading light.

This seat was pulled from an old horse drawn carriage. Now it sits minimally in a contemporary setting. It’s silhouette  graceful like a piece of art.

Bulbs-unlimited.com has created a unique niche in the industry by re-purposing light bulbs into creative contemporary orbs.
This collection of bottle caps has been turned into a clever conversation piece.

Similarly these pop tabs have been recycled into a pin dot pendant. I would love to see this as a wall sconce as well.

Next time you take the trash to the curb think about what you can do with it first … See you next week .. Till then Dwell Well.

Home Remedies

Posted on: August 3rd, 2011

Here are a few to get things started:

Windex is good but have you tried white vinegar? Mix with water and use it as a glass cleaner. For large jobs like windshields use one cup of vinegar to one gallon of water.

Most cooks have gotten used to that sticky, burnt “stuff” on the bottom of the pan.  For pans that have had food burned onto the bottom, apply a capful of ammonia, fill the pan with water and boil for a few minutes, it will soften all of that up so you can live to battle another day.

White Wine to the Rescue White wine counteracts the red wine and makes it easier to remove the original red wine stain. Shocking, I know. Pour a small amount of white wine over the red wine spot and blot with a clean towel. Do not wipe, rub or smear the spot around. If the stain is deep or has set for a while treat the remaining area with a carpet stain remover of your choice.

Got Flies? There is nothing more irritating that house flies. It’s not your fault.  Here are a few options to try.
1/  Sprinkle dry soap into garbage cans after they have been washed and allowed to dry; it acts as a repellent.
2/  Place tansy near your kitchen door or where flies tend to cluster. Other repellents include oil of cloves and mint springs.
3/  Set a sponge in a saucer and soak it with oil of lavender to repel flies.
4/  A pot of basil set on a window sill or table will help reduce the number of flies in the room.

Love your pets … of course you do!  But Accidents happen …
First, blot up what you can with paper towels. Mix one teaspoon mild dish-washing detergent in one cup warm water, dip a clean towel in the liquid and, working from outside in, dab at stain. Do not overwet. Rinse with fresh water and blot dry. Next, add on-third cup white vinegar with two-thirds cup water and dab on stain. Rinse with water; blot until dry. Once area is totally dry (after at least 24 hours), sprinkle entire carpet with baking soda or rug deodorizer. Vacuum after a few hours and don’t be so mad at Fido, it’s all taken care of.

Silverfish

The mere mention of the word makes me squeamish. If you are troubled with silverfish try placing whole cloves in the closets and drawers. I haven’t seen any in a while but I guarantee I’m doing this tonight.

Need more suggestions? Send me a quick shout out and i’ll make sure to post about it next week …

Till then … Dwell Well.
